How do you define leadership? Strategic thinking, persuasive
communication skills, interpersonal abilities that support
collaborative relationships, integrity, and an ability to
achieve results made the top of our list. Through El Futuro,
our Leadership Advancement Series and Mujeres de HACE,
Latino professionals are exposed to diverse avenues for building
these core skills and meet peers and mentors. We want to know
about your plans and goals for 2009. Please share them with us
by participating in our upcoming Latino Professional Pulse
Survey later this month. In the
meantime, be intentional about strengthening your relationships
by making one introduction or coaching one person who’s ready
for their next career opportunity.
We are proud to have United Way as a

HACE
Story
HACE events were instrumental in my recent career
search. I was consulting for a small firm focused on
entrepreneurship and competitiveness in emerging
markets, particularly the Middle East. While I enjoyed
consulting, I wanted to join a larger, global firm where
I could also work in implementing recommendations.
The HACE Chicago Career Conference in June 2008 and the
Latino Recruitment Series brought together such
companies. By speaking to recruiters and current
employees at these events, I was also able to identify
positions that aligned with my career goals and
ultimately chose to work for Zurich Financial Services.
I joined Zurich Financial Services in September as part
of its Global Associate Program. The Global Associate
Program (GAP) is a 44-week program that provides
on-the-job experience and intensive classroom training
at home and abroad. As an Associate, I am based in New
York with the Global Relationship Management (GRM) team.
My days are varied and full of learning as the program
requires I spend time with multiple teams in Chicago,
Zurich and London. Through this program, I am able to
apply my international experience, work on internal
process improvement projects and develop new strategies
to strengthen relationships with our customers.
I have to thank HACE for their commitment and
contribution to my career. I sincerely appreciate HACE's
efforts and wish the organization and its staff the
best!

Hispanic Leadership
Advancement Series Success
HACE launched its 2009
Leadership Advancement Series February 4. Twenty-five Latino leaders
representing 11 companies/organizations participated in Negotiations
training as masterfully presented by Chris Multhauf, Executive Dean
of National-Louis University College of Management and Business.
They also had the honor of meeting Vincent Allocco, Ph.D., President
of El Valor, whose mission is to support and challenge urban
families to achieve excellence and participate fully in community
life. Vincent challenged each participant to become a leader in
their communities by volunteering and joining non-profit boards.
We were thrilled to have
participation from JPMorgan Chase, Merrill Lynch and Aetna, who
participated in the pilot program in 2008. New organizations,
including Harris Bank, Banco Popular, CEDA, National City, Becker,
Delgado Erectors, Exelon, and UCAN also joined the program. Our
commitment to this work stems from a belief that these leaders will
pass on their learning to others to ensure a strong pipeline of
Latino corporate and civic leaders. We acknowledge each of these
companies and organizations for demonstrating a true commitment to
their Latino leaders and thank our program sponsor, National-Louis
University.
We still have space. If
you or your company is interested in participating, please contact
Luz Canino Baker at
Luz@hace-usa.org. The next
session will be held June 3 and focused
on "Engaging and Mobilizing People" presented by Dale Carnegie.
